Located 9.3 miles (15km) from the Italian border, Briançon acts as a transalpine gateway by controlling the passage from the chain of the Alps to the Mediterranean coast at the level of the Col de Montgenèvre. The geopolitical situation of the city has varied over time due to changes in the border location and in the cartography of the territory, hence the need to control all the slopes of the surrounding mountains.
