Thanks to the establishment of a European program for endangered species, the population of wild European bison (Bison bonasus Linnaeus, 1758) now numbers 1,800 individuals or 400 more than captive ones. The reintroduced specimens nevertheless suffer from isolation and experience inbreeding problems as well as an irreversible loss of their genetic diversity.
