A star-shaped stronghold

The stronghold of Mont-Dauphin was built in a star shape on the peaks of the then desert plateau of the Mille Vents (Thousand Winds). Designed by Vauban on the orders of Louis XIV following the invasion of troops from the Duchy of Savoy in 1692, it was to protect Provence and Dauphiné by blocking access to the Durance Valley from Italy. The ramparts and bastions which follow the topography of the site are reinforced by steep puddingstone cliffs above the Durance and the Guil. An advanced fortification surrounded by ditches defends the most open access on the side of the Eygliers glacis.
