The greater flamingo (Phœnicopterus roseus) is the only animal species to be satisfied with the highly alkaline mud of coastal and lake areas as its only food resource. While Its food specialization avoids competition with other species, it prevents the use of substitute food. The mortality of the species is, therefore, particularly important when the lagoons freeze in winter or dry up in summer.
