Baird's tapirs (Tapirus bairdii) are listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). They are threatened by deforestation, the advance of agricultural land, the increase in illegal sales and hunting for human consumption. In Central America, their population would have decreased by more than 50 % during the last three generations and there would be only about 3,000 Baird's tapirs, a figure likely to drop by another 80 % in the coming years if conservation measures are not put in place. Their living environment is particularly under pressure, more than 70 % of the forest areas of Central America having disappeared in forty years.
