The Madine Lake and Pannes ponds Natura 2000 site is part of a priority action zone for preserving biodiversity. It includes a special protection area under the Birds and Habitats European directives. The site covers 3,788 acres (1,533 ha) and extends over six municipalities in the Meuse department for the most part (3,524 acres / 1,426 ha) and Meurthe-et-Moselle for its eastern zone (264 acres / 107 ha). With more than 250 birds species and 40 mammals, Madine Lake is also classified as an Important Zone for the Conservation of Birds (ZICO).
