A sound identification
Each species of cicada has a specific repertoire, which is sometimes even its only mean of identification, the very similar morphological aspects of these species not always making it possible to distinguish them. The cymbalization, therefore, represents the fourth taxonomic dimension of cicadas in addition to the morphological, genetic, and reproductive ones. Sonograms - colored representations used for the spectral analysis of sounds and acoustic tension according to the frequency and time - allow establishing the acoustic identity card of each species and completing its specific taxonomic status.
