Bull elephants usually leave the herd that they are born during puberty, at about 15 years old. They live alone or in small bachelor groups. They may accompany older elephants and profit from their protection and their experience.
Although they are sexually mature between 12 and 15 years old, they rarely mate for the first time before 30 years old. the mating competition with other bulls, older and stronger, is difficult.
