A solitary and philopatric reptile

0
Solitary and philopatric outside the mating season, the Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni) is both highly attached to its home range and endowed with an extraordinary sense of direction which allows it to always return there. The reptile gets its bearings thanks to its remarkable olfaction and environmental memory, but also thanks to the terrestrial magnetic field and the sun. Its average speed oscillates around 820 ft (250 m) per hour.
