The Romanesque part of Sainte Odile Abbey includes the chapel where Odile's tomb stands. Formerly known as Saint John Chapel, it is her favorite in the sanctuary. It is where her mother, Béreswinde, died. Odile, feeling her end near, had herself transported there. She lies at the very place she passed away. Her body was placed in a stone coffin, enclosed in a sarcophagus exposed to the veneration of the faithful. Her remains were saved during the French Revolution and replaced much later in the tomb. It was restored in the 19th century and now bears the inscription: sepulcher of the virgin Sainte Odile.
