The Massif des Maures is a small mountain range of about 37 miles (60km) oriented from southwest to northeast and entirely located in the Var department, between Hyères and Fréjus. Relatively low, it culminates at the Signal de la Sauvette at 2,545 ft (776 m) and plunges into the Mediterranean to the south, forming a jagged and often steep coast. Difficult to access and sparsely populated due to its rugged terrain, the Massif des Maures is home to an important variety of flora and fauna.
