The 20,000 GI's of the 36th Texas Division of the US Army who landed on August 15, 1944, on Dramont beach - now nicknamed Landing beach - passed in front of the Île d'Or (Golden Island). The islet of 2,706 acres (1,095 ha) borders the eastern limit of the long pebble beach of Dramont. Of red color like the rhyolite of the Estérel massif that it extends, the Île d'Or contrasts with the blue rocks of esterellite whose exploitation in the neighboring quarries created the pebbles visible in the area.
