A singular history

The Protestant Temple of Riquewihr has a singular history. It was built on the ruins of a 12th-century Catholic church. In 1687, it was decided that it would share its premises with the Catholics of the city. It is the period of the Simultaneum which generated many organizational problems between the two communities. The temple being almost in ruins, Riquewihr decided to build a new one in neoclassical style in 1846. The municipality also erected a new Catholic church beyond the ramparts. The end of the Simultaneum and global religious appeasement brought peace back between the communities.
