The disappearance of a large number of taxa on the various sites of the Salins d'Hyères underlines the significant degradation of wetlands since the beginning of the 20th century. Within one century, no less than 63 taxa have disappeared from the Vieux Salins and 38 from the Salin des Pesquiers. Such observation justified the implementation of protection measures in these particularly fragile natural coastal areas.
