A significant cork industry

0
In the 19th century, the village of Pierrefeu-du-Var, at the foothills of the Maures Massif, developed around the cork industry flourishing in the Var department. The locality comprised several cork factories, including a large one first located in the Barri district before its transfer at the beginning of the 20th century. The main source of employment in the village, the factory once employed around 100 people and produced 60 to 80 million corks per year. However, the foreign competition, particularly from Spain and Portugal, led to its closing in 1971. Today, the former cork factory houses the Espace Bouchonnerie (Cork Space), also used by the School of Music or the Provençal Art Museum.
