Perched on top of the cliffs, a few kilometres from the beach at Carolles, the Cabane Vauban (Vauban hut) offers an impressive view of the Mont-Saint-Michel bay. When walkers arrive from the inland via this soaked and broken path, they discover this guardhouse built at the end of the 17th century on the orders of Vauban, the military architect of King Louis XIV. For 125 years, the building was used by the coastguards, recruited amongst the inhabitants of the neighbouring villages, who were responsible for observing the movements of ships in order to prevent possible enemy landings.
