Renowned as slow, the Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni) knows how to be fast in case of danger and enters completely into its shell in order to hide or protect itself from its predators. Few animals are able to break this protection that has hardened in adult tortoises. The shell of the Hermann's tortoise is colored and shaped to identify it but also to serve as camouflage. It also allows the tortoise to regulate its temperature by accumulating energy during hot hours.
