The ocher sands appeared about 100 million years ago thanks to a series of favorable geological events divided into two phases. During the Lower Cretaceous, the Luberon region was covered by a shallow epicontinental sea at the bottom of which accumulated sediments covered with glauconia, a green mineral rich in iron formed in contact with seawater and essential for the subsequent development of ochres.
