Completed in 1752, the seawall of Nice's port was lengthened by more than 164 ft (50 m) in 1841 and 1846 to enlarge the body of water from 10 to 15 acres (4 to 6 ha) and better guarantee the safety of the interior basin. Faced with the persistent risk of silting up, it was extended by 328 ft (100 m) between 1868 and 1869 after the deepening of the port and the creation of the Lympia basin. In 1872, the dyke was further lengthened and equipped with a lighthouse before another extension in the 1900s. Since the opening of the Commerce Basin in 1912, it has not undergone any length modification and is now 1,968 ft (600 m) long.
