La Grande-Motte is a coastal town located at the gates of the Camargue region, 15.53 miles (25 km) from Montpellier. Its name would originate from the nickname given to it by sailors because of its great dunes used as a landmark. The resort as it is known today was established in the 1970s on the initiative of Jean Balladur. La Grande-Motte's futuristic white buildings with geometric patterns were inspired by Mayan pyramids. Located between Montpellier and Nîmes, La Grande-Motte has 4.35 miles (7 km) of fine sandy beaches.
