The town of Banyuls-Sur-Mer (Banyuls de la Marenda in Catalan) is the second southernmost seaside resort in mainland France. Located in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in the Occitanie region, it shares a border with Spain. The town is the homeland of the artist Aristide Maillol, a painter and sculptor born in 1861 in Banyuls and local pride. A museum is dedicated to him, and several of his works of art are exhibited outdoors in the city. The name Banyuls is derived from the Latin balnoneum (bath), as the town was built near ponds.
