When the weather conditions are stable, thick fogs and mists swarm the Lorraine valleys and the Alsace plain like a sea of clouds. Autumn and winter are particularly conducive to this phenomenon of thermal inversion, with the temperatures being higher at altitude than on the plains. At sunrise, the line of the Vosges mountains seems to float above the sea of clouds trapped in the great plain of Alsace. The special light diffused by the fog has inspired many Alsatian painters like Georges Daubner, Lothar von Seebach and Paul Weiss.
