Sainte-Thérèse Basilica in Lisieux was financed by donations from all over the world, especially from South America. Known as the second place of pilgrimage in France after Lourdes, it displays Roman-Byzantine architecture. The walls are covered with vivid mosaics and stained-glass windows in shades of blue where angels, flowers, and saints mingle. They were created by two artists, Jean Gaudin father and son, who worked there all their lives. The site's Art Deco crypt exhibits 139 scattered birds. Bombed like the rest of the city in 1944, the basilica did not explode, an event seen as another miracle of Thérèse de Lisieux by the faithful.
