A Roman amphitheater from the Flavian period
0
0
The Arenas of Arles are a Roman amphitheater built as part of the Flavian expansions of the city around 80-90 AD on the Hauture hill in place of the Augustan enclosure erected a century earlier. It constitutes the most significant monument and symbol of the ancient Roman colony of Arles, today located in the Bouches-du-Rhone department and then called Arelate. The architecture of the arenas inspired by the recently completed Colosseum in Rome was designed to accommodate large audiences in accordance with their vocation as a venue for great spectacles.
