At the mouth of the Couesnon river extends the vast sandy bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. Some 3,149 ft (960 m) in circumference, the rock seems to be resting on the sand with its 17 acres (7 ha) emerged. A major spiritual site forever attached to Saint Michael, Mont-Saint-Michel has been inhabited since 709 by villagers fleeing Viking raids. The bay and the architectural ensemble of Mont-Saint-Michel have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1975.
