The Vosges massif constitutes a natural extension, to the north and the east, of the Tanet-Gazon-du-Faing national nature reserve. It includes the glacial cirques of lac Noir and lac Blanc, integrated into the Biological Reserve of the Two Lakes. It constitutes a rich biological set with many remarkable species. The eastern slope of the ZNIEFF (zone of ecological interest in flora and fauna) consists of natural habitats of glacial cirque, with a mosaic of scree, rocky outcrops, ledges. The ridge is wooded with mugo pine, a species introduced during the German occupation.
