The French town of Port-Vendres extends in the Pyrénées-Orientales department about 16 miles (26 km) from Perpignan. The port town, which culturally belongs to Northern Catalonia, is an essential stopover in Roussillon. Port-Vendres benefits from a rich cultural heritage linked to its history dating back to Antiquity, and its excavation deposit holds many vestiges of maritime history. Such heritage testimonies are found every year during underwater excavations carried out by the Association for Underwater Research in Roussillon (ARESMAR).
