Saint-Syndulphus Church extends in Hautvillers Abbey, in the Marne department. It shelters the tombstone of Dom Pérignon, who lived there from 1668 until he died in 1715. In 1668, twelve monks worked to revive a monastery almost forgotten by all. The arrival of the abbot Pérignon revolutionized the champagne wine trade. He used to cap the bottles with hermetic wax, but the fermentation of the wine made them explode. To preserve them, Dom Pérignon developed the famous cork. Some say that he even created the shape of the champagne flutes.
