The taking of Hermann's tortoises (Testudo hermanni hermanni) from their natural environment is strictly prohibited by law in France. However, many adult tortoises continue to be captured each year by individuals or organized traffickers, endangering the survival of the populations deprived of their main spawners. According to estimations, the number of captive Hermann's tortoises in France is today greater than that of individuals living in their natural environment.
