A remarkable return

The horse is making a remarkable comeback throughout French vineyards. It represents a much less expensive investment than a tractor. Excessively steep or too small plots are a problem for the machines while the horse advances quietly over any type of terrain. The farming yield is obviously slower, with one row instead of three, but the soils benefit from the horse-man cooperation. Less compressed, their microbial life is more abundant and diverse. The quality of the soils' increase also enhances that of the grapes, which fill with the aromas and minerals of the ground. The Champagne Marguet domain has used Ardennes workhorses since 2010.
