The Vaucluse department borders the departments of Gard to the west, Ardèche to the north-west, Drôme - in which the Vaucluse canton of Valréas is entirely enclosed - to the north, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence to the east, and Var and Bouches-du-Rhône to the south. Its relief alternates mountains (Dentelles de Montmirail, Massif du Luberon, Monts de Vaucluse), plateaus and cultivated plains dotted with hills and limited by limestone reliefs extending the Alpine massif. Vaucluse is dominated by Mont Ventoux, nicknamed the Giant of Provence, which culminates at 6,272 ft (1,912 m).
