The success of the June 6, 1944, landing at Utah Beach in the Manche department is partly linked to an error in the landing zone. The landing took place 1.2 miles (2 km) further south than planned at a less fortified beach exit zone. The position was, however, armed with tanks, armored and dug-in turrets, cannons, howitzers, and machine-gun nests. All these devices as well as the buried shelters were connected by deep trenches and protected by bunkers.
