The sale and purchase of Hermann's tortoises (Testudo hermanni hermanni) from their natural environment are prohibited throughout France and constitute an offense punishable by six months in prison and a 15,000€ fine. As for the detention of Hermann's tortoises born in captivity, it is subject to a prefectural authorization. It requires identifying the adult specimens by implantation of an electronic transponder and the keeping of a register of the animal movements.
