The sale and purchase of Hermann's tortoises (Testudo hermanni) taken from their natural environment is prohibited throughout France and is an offense punishable by six months in prison and a €15,000 fine. As for the possession of Hermann's tortoises born in captivity, it requires prefectural authorization and the identification of the adult specimens by implantation of an electronic transponder and the keeping of a register of the animal's movements.
