Kaiser Wilhelm II had the Haut-Koenigsbourg rebuilt in 1900 for the glory of the German Empire. The castle returned to France in 1918, following the defeat of Germany during World War I. In October of the same year, the Emperor made a last trip to the Haut-Koenigsbourg. On the fireplace of the party hall, he engraved: Ich habe es nicht gewoll, which means I did not want it that way.
