A region linked to wood
1
0
The Jura region has exploited its many forests for ages. From the 15th century, carters were as sought after as lumberjacks, and transporting wood provided winter work for the peasants. The Jura inhabitants became masters in the construction of carts with pegs instead of nails. The hubs and axles are in beech as are the double rim, while the tray and the edges are made from fir. They could carry a ton of goods (wood, wine, cheese) and often drove in convoys of 3 to 20 carriages. The horses are solid Comtois often bought in Maîche. The leading horse is equipped with a mirror and a fox's tail, while the last has bells to inform the driver.
