The Przewalski horse breed was rediscovered in 1879 in the mountains of Dzungaria bordering the Gobi desert. The species has been perpetuated thanks to the specimens of the zoos and foundations where breeding stock exchange and population expansion programs have been set up. There were 300 Przewalski horses living in captivity around the world by the end of the 1970s, while their number was near 1,800 individuals in the early 2000s.
