The spruce forests that today cover the slopes of the Auvergne volcanoes and Sancy massif constitute recent forestation in areas that were once devoid of trees. Unlike fir trees, also part of the conifer family, which need deep soil to thrive, spruces adapt to grounds where the rock is shallow and the soil thin and are resistant to cold as well as to altitude.
