A protective mother

The Przewalski mare (Equus ferus przewalskii) develops a protective behavior known as retrieving towards her foal. From birth and in the post-partum weeks, it results in an almost systematic attack on any individual approaching her offspring, whether a member of the group (stallion, other mares or foals), an individual of a neighboring group, or individuals of other species. The foal is then progressively integrated into the herd but remains under the protection of its mother.
