Nestled in a meander of the Lot, Cahors is labeled a Ville d'Art et d'Histoire (Town of Art and History). The Romans called it Divona Cadurcorum, and numerous underground ruins attest to its ancient past. However, Cahors mostly displays remains from its medieval period. The boulevard that cuts the town in half follows the route of the 7th-century ramparts. From the 12th to the 14th centuries, the Caorsins, notorious moneylenders, brought prosperity to the city. They built houses, a cathedral, a university, and a bridge, the Pont Valentré, used by pilgrims to Compostela from the Via Podiensis.
