The fact that ice transforms the surface of a lake into a solid ground on which it is possible to walk is linked to the specificity of water. Its solid form, less dense than its liquid form, indeed remains on the surface. On this point, water differs from most of the other known liquid compounds (oil, alcohol, etc.), which solidify by the bottom as their solid form is denser. This essential property of water has allowed aquatic life not to freeze during evolution.
