A pronotum useful for identification

The thorax of the cicada has six thin and hairy legs on its ventral part, which allow it to fix itself to plants and along tree trunks. Its dorsal area (photo) has a large empty surface, the pronotum, and two pairs of wings. The color and patterns of the pronotum and the color and shape of the wing veins serve for species recognition and identification by entomologists.
