The Roland Garros promenade borders the beach of Houlgate over a length of 1,640 ft (500 m). It occupies a brick dike built in 1910 according to plans by the architect Lewicki to replace a plank dike installed by the owners of the seaside villas between the casino and the Protestant temple. Inaugurated on August 25, 1912, it was covered with its current paving in 1973. It was baptized Promenade Roland Garros in 1988 in homage to the aviator who took off from the beach located in front of the Les Mouettes villa on September 6, 1912, to break the world altitude record.
