Since Antiquity, the coastline of the Saint-Roch cove, where the Port Vauban of Antibes extends, has been subjected to progressive siltation. Such phenomenon is linked to the alluvial input from the Var and Brague rivers reworked by a north-south coastal current that filled the shore for nearly 984 ft (300 m) to the south. Fort Carré, which now stands on land attached to the city, was once separated from the mainland by a narrow sound.
