Located on a lithospheric bulge, Maré, the highest of the Loyalty islands with 459ft (140m), carries up to 15 reef terraces on the outer slope of its peripheral ridge. Its neighbors Lifou (341ft/104m) and Ouvéa (150ft/46m) only have 4 or 5 which is more than Grande-Terre where the terrace phenomenon is much less developed due to the greater distance from the subduction zone separating the Australian and Pacific plates.
