A profane and mixed use
Despite its mystical origin and the legends that attribute the secret of its manufacture to an apparition of the Virgin, lace has experienced a much more profane use. From the Renaissance, it was used to garnish and decorate the dresses of the ladies of the Court but also to adorn the gentlemen and lords. Until the French Revolution, which caused the lost of its clientele, lace was thus one of the preponderant elements of women's and men's fashion. Though the Consulate and the Empire gave lace its female clientele back, the male one never returned.
