The mare and her foal have a privileged or even exclusive relationship until the weaning of the foal around five months in Thoroughbred breeding farms. The mare modulates the various behaviors of her foal in areas as different as its diet, the discovery of its environment, or its relations with the other horses of the harem. The mother also plays a decisive role that the foal builds with human beings such as Olivia Saelens, the owner and founder of the Haras des Étincelles (Étincelles stud farm) in Mesnil-Simon in the Calvados department.
