A primitive village on a spur

The primitive village of Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt in the Vaucluse department was limited to the outline of the imposing rocky spur that dominates the current locality. The rocky outcrop was surmounted by walls remarkable for their fish-scaled rafters typical of the 11th century, the remains of which are still visible. Visitors enter the castrum of the primitive village through a passage located at the end of the current dam onto which the dwellings resting on the defensive wall open. The only door was made up of a 12th-century double ogival postern leading directly down to the current village.
