Mirepoix is a small town of 3,100 inhabitants, located halfway between Carcassonne and Foix in the Ariège department. The city was mentioned for the first time in the 5th century in a charter granted to the inhabitants by Raymond Roger, Count of Foix. Despite lootings, fires, and floods, Mirepoix has retained a medieval aspect and still displays numerous half-timbered houses.
