A prenuptial molt
0
0
The prenuptial molt of greater flamingos (Phœnicopterus roseus) begins when their single chick leaves the nursery and becomes self-reliant. Most of the time, the loss of the old feathers and the regrowth of new ones overlap to allow the flamingos to keep flying. The gradual appearance of the new feathers enables them to display, from November, their attractive bright pink plumage, identical in males and females. The two sexes of the species, which changes breeding partners every year, can then parade as equals.
